Activity 3: Discussion 1-Blog

Activity 3: Discussion 1 - Blog

What I know about modeling.

3D Modeling is used to create assets for movies, video games, television, and more. Models can generally be defined as one of two categories: hard surface and organic. I've always thought of hard surface models to be anything man-made, such as armor, weapons, vehicles, buildings, or anything with flat surfaces and clean lines. I consider animals, people, plants, etc. as organic models. I believe topology is important in both hard surface and organic models, even if the asset will not be animated. It's good practice to have a nice, clean mesh on any  model.

This is how I think the fine arts competencies relate to modeling.

Fine arts competencies are vital in relation to modeling. It is extremely important to have an understanding of values, color, lighting, composition, perspective, textures, and many other practices traditionally found in fine art. These are the building blocks of understand the world around us and how to interpret it into a 3D space.

I still have these questions:

While I'm feeling more and more comfortable and confident in Maya and ZBrush as far as modeling goes, I'm still very perplexed with UV's, baking, and texturing. It hasn't been a main focus for any of the 3D modeling classes so far as modeling and topology have been the primary focus. I'm hoping future classes go into greater detail, but in the meantime I am researching the techniques on my own.

I imported my base arm into ZBrush. It took me a little while to get comfortable in ZBrush, but once I was modeling my arm for a good 2 hours I started to develop some muscle memory(no pun intended). I got a hang of controlling the camera angles and quickly selecting brushes. I had particular issues with the fingers. I think it may have been how my mesh was laid out, but I kept creating unwanted artifacts when I'd try to sculpt the fingers. I'm having a hard time getting them to look right. The veins and sleeve were fun to create. I really enjoyed playing around with the different brushes to see what kind of effects I could get.

I created the basic form of my arm using Maya. I felt much more comfortable starting in Maya than ZBrush. The fingers need some work here, but I think I have a good start.
